Astronium urundeuva (true aroeira) is classified as an endangered species in Brazilian and global levels. In a pure progeny test was observed symptoms of stem rot and high mortality due to pathogen attack. The present work had as objectives: quantify the infestation level over the years; estimate genetic parameters at three ages; and determine the effectiveness of vegetation index analysis in detecting mortality in plantations. Measurements of tree diameter at 1.30 m above ground level (DBH, cm) and survival were performed at 11, 16 and 22 years old. For DBH, the heritability among progeny means ranged from 0.32 to 0.44, indicating the possibility of genetic gains. Survival at 11, 16 and 22 years old were 95.7%, 92.1% and 86.1%, respectively, with spatial dependence of survival among progenies. The survival percentage obtained from the vegetation index was highly correlated with the survival measured in the field, being, therefore, a valid and efficient method for the proposed use.
