Use of solar kiln for drying lumber in the south of Tocantins State, Brazil

This study aimed to evaluate the use of a solar kiln for drying Pinus spp. sawn wood and compare it to outdoor drying. For this project, a solar kiln was built as a metallic structure coated with polyvinyl chloride plastic. The boards submitted to the two drying methodologies reached the lowest humidity on the 22nd day. In both methodologies, the final humidity values were above the equilibrium humidity. The solar kiln is efficient in the wood drying process, obtaining final humidity, and drying time lower than those obtained outdoors.
